A Battersea student is one of 29 undergraduates who has been awarded a bursary from the Royal Television Society.

Adam Kona, from Reform Street, has been given a £1,000 Steve Hewlett Scholarship to study a bachelor's degree in computer science at the University of Birmingham from this September, which helps subsidise his expenses and living costs.

He will also receive free membership of the RTS and The Hospital Club, a creative community studio in Covent Garden, while studying and is entitled to a year’s free membership at the society after graduation.

In his final year, Mr Kona will also be able to gain mentoring opportunities with industry members.

The 19-year-old said: “It was more shock than anything [receiving the scholarship] because it’s really competitive. As much as I thought I had put in a strong application, I didn’t really expect anything from it.

“So it was a shock and an honour to receive such a competitive, but really good, bursary scholarship.”

Asked about how he found out, he added: “I got a phone call from one of the organisers, we spoke on the phone and she told me the result. After that I got a confirmation email, just formalising it, and I just needed to send a few more details through.

“My mum and my family were all really happy. I told them and they were really over the moon about it, they showed more excitement than I did.”

Twenty two bursaries for television production and broadcast journalism courses, in addition to seven for computing and engineering, have been given out.

The Steve Hewlett Scholarship aims to widen participation in media and other related industries and support young people from lower income backgrounds who aspire to work in television.

Theresa Wise, chief executive of the Royal Television Society, said: “The RTS has supported 101 inspiring and talented individuals towards their educational goals via our bursary schemes. The schemes are important as they offer those from lower income backgrounds not only financial support, but access to mentoring and a network of contacts within the broadcasting industry.

“As well as welcoming our new bursary recipients, 2017 also sees our first round of graduates. There have been some excellent results and I look forward to supporting and following the progression and their careers.”
