Computing Their Future: Peekskill Students Learn The Code Source: Lanning Taliaferro
Much emphasis has been placed on STEM instruction in schools in recent years, with the idea of increasing the number of students going into science and technology careers.
But all of that increased attention on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) has still left a gap in computer science.
To address that gap, many students across the country recently participated in an “Hour of Code” event to celebrate National Computer Science Week. The purpose of the HOC program is to “demystify” the coding process and show students that “anyone can learn the basics to be a maker, a creator or an innovator.”
Peekskill students were among them.
At Hillcrest Elementary students learned about the process of computer coding, using the popular game Minecraft as an example. Students enjoyed learning the new skill and were surprised at how easily they were able to create games and graphics using computer coding, district officials said on Facebook.
