For Your Next Research Paper, Work With IEEE Collabratec Source: MONICA ROZENFELD
Would you like to coauthor a research article with the best minds in your field and be able to store and share materials from one place. IEEE Collabratec’s authoring tools make that possible.
Providing a host of resources from one central hub, the platform can help you stay abreast of the research in your area. And it allows you to share your own research with technologists who can offer feedback.
“IEEE Collabratec brings together everything authors and researchers need,” says Dawn Melley, director of editorial services for IEEE Periodicals, in Piscataway, N.J. “It provides access to services that help them create their research papers without having to leave the platform.”
VIRTUAL WORK SPACES
Begin by creating a private group of technologists, no matter their geographic location, to become part of your virtual workspace. Do this by conducting a search to discover people who share your technical interests―big data and cybersecurity, say. The results will display technologists’ university or employer affiliation, where they’re located, and if they’re IEEE members. View the profiles and send invitations to join your group. Such private groups are visible only to their members.
Once your group is set up, begin collaborating on research papers and sharing documents and other materials.
BUILD YOUR LIBRARY
Before writing your article, you can gather research sources in your private IEEE Collabratec library. Use the bookmarklet tool to add articles to your library from a variety of sites, including the IEEE Xplore Digital Library, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. You can upload documents to your library and catalog and organize your documents to suit your work flow.
Filters can help you find documents in your library, as it increases in size, including articles that have been recommended or that you’ve marked to review.
“Everything is in the same place, so you don’t have to send e-mails to explain the many projects you are working on or to keep track of where the latest versions of your documents are,” says IEEE Fellow Gianluca Setti, 2013 and 2014 director and vice president of IEEE Publication Services and Products, who helped lead IEEE Collabratec’s development. “The platform also allows you to make your work more visible among peers.”
GETTING TO WORK
Now that you have a team to work with and a wealth of information at your fingertips, you’re ready to collaborate and write an article. Without leaving the site, you can write new documents using Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive, or Overleaf, a tool for collaborative authoring in LaTeX, commonly used by authors of technical documents. Your group members can work on the same document, or create several documents. Real-time editing allows everyone in the group to view one another’s contributions.
The library also offers services for retrieving citations and generating bibliographies from articles retrieved from third-party sources. Those who have accounts with the research platforms Mendeley and Zotero can import citations.
IEEE Collabratec makes it easer to format citations, too. In the library settings, you can select which style you prefer: Chicago Manual of Style, IEEE, MLA, or another.
COMMMUNITY OF AUTHORS
Participants in IEEE Collabratec can join the IEEE AuthorLab community, where they can share ideas on how to prepare research articles or discuss the benefits of open-access publishing. They also can submit questions to IEEE staff about getting published and add article links and videos that might be helpful to others in the community.
This article is part of a series explaining the many things possible through IEEE Collabratec, the new online tool that helps technologists network, collaborate, and create, all from one central hub.
