A $22 million commitment is being made to artificial intelligence, robotics and autonomous driving research at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Toyota Research Institute Chief Executive Gill Pratt announced the funding Wednesday during an address to faculty at the school.

The agreement calls for an initial $22 million over four years for research collaborations in enhanced driving safety, partner robotics and indoor mobility, autonomous driving and student learning and diversity.

Pratt says in a release that Toyota looks forward to collaborating with the school's research faculty and students to develop "new intelligent technologies that will help drivers travel more safely, securely and efficiently."

The university will ask faculty for proposals addressing challenges in mobility, safety and home robotics.
