Stamford students to participate in ‘Hour of Code’

All of the city’s 21 public schools will participate in the “Hour of Code,” a global initiative by Computer Science Education Week and Code.org to introduce students to one hour of computer science and computer programming.
During the weeklong event, some of the elementary school students will learn to program by creating computer algorithms that move a cartoon character from one place to another. Middle- and high-school students will learn to write more complex code, including programming a Minecraft character to do particular tasks or creating their own music.
Students in Cloonan Middle School’s Scratch Club, a computer science group, will also show teachers the basics of coding at their faculty meeting.
The initiative has become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, which started with one-hour coding activities, but has since expanded to other community efforts.
“Providing every student, regardless of their background or interests, the opportunity to experience computer programming may open a world of opportunities for them,” Michael Fernandes, assistant superintendent of secondary schools, said Monday in a news release.
