Cloud computing and jobs in IT

Apparently the common trend in IT is for businesses to hire cloud computing companies to manage and store data causing a smaller need for IT techs. This trend is not new. This trend mimics the 50’s and 60’s when mainframes ruled and the use of dummy terminals were nothing more than browsers to view and query data. Cloud computing is fast becoming the new mainframe technology. More importantly, cloud computing affects the job security of the IT techs that design back-end architecture of a network, those who design databases on the servers where the data resides, IT personnel that handle backups, as well as those who monitor the health and disk space of servers, those who program and script code, and even desktop support personnel. IT personnel who work on faxes and printers continue to remain unaffected by this trend.

Cloud computing is very much becoming the norm while the need for on-premise IT personnel slowly diminishes. Perhaps it is time for a migration of IT techies to work for large global cloud providers. Cloud computing provides IT personnel with incredible job opportunities that span the globe. The idea of getting paid to travel to data centers world-wide provides for an exciting change from connecting to servers remotely or working at a local data center a few miles away. Traversing the globe to remediate changes on an IT system that serves several companies is fast becoming the new norm.

Cloud hosting has definitely become easier and quite inexpensive. Microsoft’s Azure, Google, IBM, and other companies provide a foundation for businesses to manage accounts and store data on the cloud without having to pay the high costs of renting server space at a data center and buying expensive server equipment. These cloud hosting companies easily provide account and identity management, data loss protection, database capabilities, storage, backups and also provide repositories for centralized management of company documentation and intellectual property cutting the costs of sofware licensing almost in half. The security risks involved however, remain questionable and it is only a matter of time when the weaknesses are exposed.

Techies will always be a necessity no matter what the platform trend may be. Adopting to the new trends in computing is key to job security and career advancement. Just follow the money.
