FBI on hiring spree for cyber skill

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking to hire people with cyber expertise to fill agent positions as well as interns and non-FBI agent duties.

"For the first time in a long time that I can remember, the FBI is hiring cyber non-agent positions, like computer scientists, IT specialists, computer technology and paid interns for those who still are in college," said FBI public affairs specialist Maureen Dempsey.

Since its earliest days, the FBI has recruited those with special skills to fill special agent ranks. Among these have included lawyers, accountants, scientists and engineers, to name a few.

Today, the most sought-after candidates are those with cyber expertise. Those with these skills will be asked to investigate high-priority cases. Among these include website hacks, intrusions, data theft, botnets and denial of service attacks.

To keep pace with evolving threats, the FBI is seeking experienced and certified cyber experts to consider joining the FBI.

The Bureau recently launched a campaign to bring aboard more technical talent, including computer scientists, IT specialists, and engineers. In a job posting ― open until Jan. 20 ― the FBI says no other organization will apply the expertise of successful candidates like the FBI.

Dempsey, who works at the Buffalo Division, said that Western New Yorkers who apply for cyber special agent positions will be mixed in with other FBI agent candidates. If hired, the cyber special agents will go to Quantico, Va. for 20-plus weeks of training, and won't immediately be assigned to their home region.

However, the FBI will try to place those they hire for computer scientist or IT specialist positions at field offices near where they live. Those who qualify for summer internship programs will be at the field office near home or school. More information is available here. www.fbi.gov
