The State Department says it is temporarily shutting down portions of its unclassified computer network to make security upgrades in response to attempted hacking attacks.

The department said in a statement on Friday that the "planned outage" would affect some Internet-linked systems on the network, including email, and would likely last through the weekend. It adds that the systems are being taken offline to make improve network security and respond to "activity of concern."

The department has been the target of numerous cyberattacks in recent months and was forced to take a similar step late last year.

The statement said that none of the department's classified systems has been compromised.
