Golden Isles Career Academy hosted Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle’s 8th annual Business and Education Summit on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, which will continue into Friday. Today, Lt. Governor Cagle named Houston County Career Academy the College and Career Academy of the Year and Mohawk Industries as the Business Partner of the Year.
“I am excited Houston County Career Academy was named the College and Career Academy of the Year and also applaud Mohawk Industries, being named Business Partner of the Year,” said Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. “These partnerships have produced incredible, world-class educational institutions that are leading our state into the bright economic future of tomorrow. Their proven success at providing our students the relevant, job-related skills they need is more important than ever in the 21st Century economy.”
The summit brought together business, industry, and education leaders to discuss and demonstrate the importance of the manufacturing industry in Georgia, and the role education plays in its success. Attendees had an opportunity to hear from College and Career Academy CEOs as well as manufacturing industry leaders and their community partners as they discussed ways to transform high school learning and new ideas to support the emerging workforce needed in manufacturing.
In 2010, Houston County Career Academy joined the College and Career Academy Network. Currently Houston County Career Academy has an enrollment of approximately 90 full-time students and 450 part-time students attending career preparation classes. The students are enrolled in a course of study from the current selection including Automotive, Business and Computer Science, Health Care Science, Computer Networking, Engineering, Manufacturing, Electronics, Criminal Justice, Teaching as a Profession, or Metals Technology. Houston County Career Academy has a long-standing, successful partnership with Central Georgia Technical College where they have the largest Career Academy dual enrollment program in the state. Houston County Career Academy also has many partnerships in the community including Robins Air Force Base, Flint Energies, and businesses of Warner Robins.
Mohawk Industries’ commitment to the Gordon County College and Career Academy (GCCCA) is a strategic partnership designed to add depth to the Academy’s course offerings, provide a foundation for students to optimize their professional potential, and develop a future workforce with the skills necessary to meet evolving business needs. Through a dedicated company-paid instructor, material and financial support, sponsorship of innovative programming such as the STEM camp, instructional resources like the industrial electrical lab and paid pre-apprenticeships and internships, Mohawk has provided a comprehensive alliance that enhances the impact of GCCCA and benefits its current and future students.
College and Career Academies, an initiative of Lt. Governor Casey Cagle, partner local school systems with the state’s technical colleges, other post-secondary institutions, and local businesses, enabling the development of high school and college-level programs that train students for quality, in-demand jobs. Students find that the academies’ challenging, hands-on programs provide greater relevancy and value, which not only lead to higher graduation rates, but also employment. The specified training for students is attractive to area businesses and communities prosper from the highly trained and skilled workforce. Businesses have found that partnering with the College and Career Academies provides a qualified and prepared workforce.
Because of Cagle’s initiative, there are currently over 34 College and Career Academies in Georgia. Students from different college and career academies across the state enjoy graduation rates in the high ninetieth percentile and 100 percent post-secondary or job placement rates.
