A team of UMass Amherst computer scientists took the top prize in an international competition sponsored by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and U.S. Department of Commerce.
Their approach to designing a computer algorithm that provides more efficient and effective patent searches will be incorporated into the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s new online platform, PatentsView.
The team from UMass, advised by professor Andrew McCallum, went up against entries from China, Germany, Australia, and Belgium, and others from the United States.
Team members included graduate students Nicholas Monath and Ari Kobren; Michael Wick, now at Oracle Labs; Sameer Singh, now at the University of Washington, and Jack Sullivan, now at Cambridge Semantics.
