??Smart Guns?? making waves in firearm industry Source: Allyson Blair
A new technology is gaining traction in the gun industry.
Smart guns are personalized weapons that fire only for the owner or authorized users.
Right now there are two variations, one using fingerprint recognition and the other requires the user to wear a special watch.
Many believe this technology could reduce gun violence and accidental shootings.
"Kids wouldn't be able to get it our use it because it would have to be my fingerprint," said mother of four Heather Mills.
But critics of the guns say the technology is not reliable.
Ron Myers spent more than three decades working for the Federal Bureau of Investigations. He headed up the firearms training program for three years.
Myers said the technology just isn't reliable because anything mechanical can fail.
"I've actually been in five shootings in my career but only once did I have to fire my gun. The last thing I wanted to worry about is if my gun is going to work when I need it," said Myers.
CBS 5 News couldn't find any stores in the Valley that sell smart guns but they're available online.
The gun accessories start at about $450.
