Google News Lab Helps Journalists...Use Google

One would hope that most journalists (particularly tech journalists) know how to use Google's services, but for those who need a little help, the search giant has introduced News Lab.

Unsure how to set up Google Alerts? Want to learn how to monetize your digital content? Need to brush up on Google Analytics? Check out a News Lab tutorial.

The Web giant got a head start on News Lab last week, with an update to Google Trends, which now lets users explore minute-by-minute data related to the more than 100 billion searches that take place on the site every month. The improved service includes a ranked, real-time listing of trending stories, as well as a range of featured stories―the Charleston church shootings, Greece, and the 2016 election, for example.

To that end, News Lab will include a "daily feed of curated Google Trends based on the headlines of the day," News Lab director Steve Grove wrote in a blog post.

Google will also hold hackathons with the Center for Investigative Reporting and provide financial support and mentorship to San Francisco media accelerator Matter and Hacks/Hackers, a global community group for developers and journalists.

"As both the media landscape and technology continue to evolve, we believe we can create a more informed world if technologists and journalists work together," Grove said.

In an age when anyone with a smartphone can play reporter, Google wants to ensure user-generated content "is a positive and game-changing force in media," Grove said.

Last week, Google also announced YouTube Newswire, a hub intended to make it easier to find eyewitness videos from around the world.

The News Lab boasts teams in the U.S., U.K., France, and Germany; it also powers the training and research arm of Google's Digital News Initiative in Europe.
