Mac OS X Lion sells one million copies on Day 1 Source: Buypoe
In less than 24 hours Apple’s new operating system has reached over 1 million downloads. OS X Lion has over 250 new features including Launchpad, which allows the user to find and view apps in a set up that resembles the iPad or the iPhone, and Mission Control, which shows everything running on your Mac at once. There is also a security upgrade which includes an auto-save and a new feature called AirDrop which allows users to quickly transfer files wirelessly.
Lion is currently only available for purchase through Apple’s Mac App Store, priced at $29. This is much cheaper than previous OS updates, no doubt because of the disc-less method of distribution. The cheap price combined with easy access has ensured truly astounding sales.
It is also described as the easiest to install software update yet, and combined with many new Multi-Touch gesture functions, as well as Launchpad, it is clear that Apple are trying to create a more user-friendly experience, perhaps aiming to entice customers who currently only own one of their portable devices. It certainly seems that iPhone users will feel right at home with OS X Lion.
Unfortunately not everyone can download and run Lion. Your Mac must have an Intel processor and at least 2 gigabytes of RAM. Users also must have OS X Snow Leopard installed to update, as older versions of the Mac operating system do not have access to the Mac App Store. Apple have announced that digital download will not be the only method of acquiring Lion, and starting August the OS will also be available for purchase from the Apple Store on a USB drive for $69.
Apple have also announced that all new Macs released from today will include a recovery method of installing Lion onto the hard drive. This includes the new MacBook Airs and the new MacBook Minis that have just been released.
