Bing-Yahoo chime in with nearly 30% of U.S. search Source: Greg Lamm
Bing-powered searches accounted for 29 percent of searches in August in the U.S., a 3 percent increase over the previous month, according to the latest report from Experian Market Services.
The Experian Hitwise report added up Yahoo’s search share for August (16 percent) and Bing’s share (13 percent) to get to the 29 percent. Microsoft’s Bing provides the underlying technology used on both sites under an agreement between the two tech companies.
Google is still the king of search, with 65 percent of the searches in the U.S. in August, according to the report. Google’s share of searches decreased by 1 percent.
No. 3 in search is Yahoo, which is embroiled in a nasty breakup with former CEO Carol Bartz, who was unceremoniously fired this week after Yahoo’s board said she was underperforming.
The report highlights how the Big Three search engines dominate in the U.S. The Hitwise Search Engine Analysis report said the remaining 64 search engines accounted for 6 percent of U.S. searches.
In 2009 Microsoft and Yahoo struck an online search and advertising deal that allowed Microsoft’s underlying Bing search technology to be used on both sites. Yahoo agreed to take care of search-advertising sales, using Microsoft’s advertising technology. Microsoft said the deal would help it compete with Google.
In other Bing-related news, Microsoft and Twitter have extended their partnership that will keep integrating tweets in Bing’s search engine.
