Huawei Unveils World's Slimmest Smartphone at CES Source: Alex Colon
LAS VEGAS―Huawei announced the Ascend P1 and Ascend P1 S at CES. Huawei claims the P1 S is the world's slimmest smartphone, measuring just .26 inches thick.
"We're excited to unveil the world's slimmest smartphone here at CES 2012," said Richard Yu, Chairman of Huawei. Yu claims that innovative molding and injection, along with customized components, a robust metal frame, and Corning Gorilla Glass has made it possible to manufacture such a thin device.
In addition to the ultra-slim design, the P1 S is packing some top-of-the-line specs. It features a 960-by-540 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display and is powered by a dual-core 1.5GHz TI OMAP 4460 Cortex A9 processor. It's a true world phone, and Huawei claims that low power consumption hardware and proprietary algorithms will provide both it with better battery life than competing devices, and that it uses up to 30 percent less power than current comparable smartphones with its 1800 mAh battery.
CES 2012 The P1 is essentially the same device as the P1 S, but measures a slightly thicker .3 inches and comes with a 1670mAh battery. Both phones also feature 8-megapixel rear-facing and 1.3-megapixel front-facing cameras with dual flash LED and HDR effect optimization. They will ship running the latest version Android, 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).
Until recently, Huawei hasn't been known in the U.S. for particularly high-end or innovative smartphones. With the arrival of the P1 S, it's looking like that might change. Additionally, Huawei recently released the Mercury for Cricket Wireless, which we reviewed just last week and which we think is the best prepaid smartphone available in America right now.
Dates haven't been announced, but Huawei expects the Ascend P1 and P1 S may be available in the U.S. this summer. No pricing or carrier details have been announced either, but it's shaping up to be an interesting year for Huawei. Check back with PCMag for more details and full reviews of the Ascend P1 and P1 S when they become available.
