Online Dating Is Second Most Popular Way to Meet a Partner Source: Singletons
Singletons looking for love should forget hanging out in bars or coffee shops -- dating websites are now the second most popular place to meet a new partner, according to a scientific study.
US psychology experts analyzed more than 400 public interest surveys and psychology studies on the topic and found that after meeting their partner through friends, most romantic connections are made online.
The 64-page report, commissioned by the Association for Psychological Science (APS) in time for Valentine's Day, will be published in the journal Psychological Science.
It pointed out that while less than one percent of couples met through the web in the early 90s, digital dating now accounts for around one in three relationships.
About 40 million Americans visit online dating sites each month, according to Online Dating Magazine, with 120,000 marriages a year generated by dating websites.
However, the APS study dismissed claims by some dating websites that special software could make a better match based on "scientific algorithms."
